Katy Perry Works The Clash

Katy Perry, Agyness Deyn and Fearne Cotton have long been fans of colour clashing, and although it may seem like a scary trend to master, it's one well worth looking at if you want to stay ahead of the fashion pack this season.

Last week we brought you a set of new fashion rules to abide by, and this week we're looking at the new colour clash, which is taking the fashion world by storm.

Forget carefully coordinating your outfit, so that your shoes match your handbag and so on- this season and beyond is all about taking a chance with your style and clashing some eye-popping prints and colours together.

Now, it's easy to make mistakes with this trend, as with any trend it requires you doing some fashion research and digging through all your clothes to find some winning combinations.

You know the old saying 'red and green should never been seen?' well, on some occasions this rule can be bent, but only if you find the right shades of green and red. Generally dark greens can look nice paired with bright red colours, but again it's down to what works for you.

The circus trend can claim some credit for making clashing colours acceptable in the mainstream, as can harlequin; both have been huge this season and for good reason, as it's a look that can be worn by all. Designers have seen this coming for the last year too, and it's certainly demonstrated by Luella's A/W 08 show, where she teamed colourful tights with multi-coloured ribbon dresses, to create an almost colourful gothic look.

Early hints of the Americana trend from next spring are also starting to creep through onto the high-street, which will see lots of blues and reds paired together too. So get ahead of the trend and start by wearing some electric blue tights, combined with some red pumps for example, or make the colour of the moment, tomato red a big feature and team with a blue cardigan.

Blue and pink may well be a throwback from the 80s, but it's making a comeback for the 00s as the party season gets into full swing. Bright pink sequins teamed with colourful blue accessories are set to be huge and if you can incorporate this into your make-up too, you'll be on to a winner.

Sophie Ellis Bextor has long worked the colour clash in her make-up to the extreme and managed to look quirky and cool in doing so too. Who can forget her 'Murder on the Dancefloor' look she sported back in 2001, where she teamed her signature red lips with bright green sparkly eye shadow, and amazingly looked stunning.

Polkadots too are on trend this season and teamed with some colourful accessories, will give you a unique party outfit. Try teaming your polkadot dress with some orange or pink tights, to really liven up the look, or mix prints together and incorporate some lace into the outfit, which is also big news this year.

Don't be tempted to go out and splurge on new looks this year, especially with the credit crunch really starting to bite. Simply revisit your wardrobe and dig deep for pieces you had long since forgotten, as that's what fashion is all about- reinventing and reworking until you find your own unique style.
