2008 has been an exceptional year in fashion and with Christmas just around the corner, we show what to keep and ditch to be fashionable in 2009.

From celebrities on the red carpet to the high street, the biggest trends to hit this year have been worn to death. Bows, tartan and lace are some of the trends, which come 2009 should be put to the back of every wardrobe.

A trend to ditch for 2009 is ruffles. They have been huge this year, with dresses, shirts and skirts all being adorned with this must-have trend. But for Spring 2009, it is all about the body con. This look isn't for every figure, but if you're blessed with killer curves, give it a try. Body con has been seen a little bit on the catwalk this year but designer, Herve Leger has been putting stunning celebrities in body con dresses everywhere. Everyone from Rachel Bilson to Hayden Panettiere has been showing off their curves in his hit dress.

The next trend to ditch for 2009 is tartan. Replacing the well-known checks is the oriental print, which is set to be 2009's hottest floral print. Designers, Just Cavalli and Marc Jacobs both shown oriental prints a lot in the S/S collections for 2009. Apart from on the catwalk, oriental prints haven't really made much of an impact on the high street yet. But this is definitely a trend to look out for in 2009.

A trend that is already making quite an impact is the wet-look. This trend is going to be even more popular in 2009, so get out to the high street now and buy everything wet-look. Everyone from Agyness Deyn to Ashley Olsen has been snapped wearing the most popular trend of wet-look leggings. Wet-look is replacing the lace trend of 2008, which was made popular through the gothic trend. This look is really sexy and adds and chic edge to any outfit, it also fits in nicely with the punk and 1980s trend seen all over London's catwalk.

Finally we're saying goodbye to bow in exchange for asymmetrical dresses. Catwalks were awash with next seasons must-have trend of the one-strap dress. This trend looks great on every figure as it draws the eyes up the body and softens broad shoulders. Designers, Dior and Monique L’huillier have been showing off their asymmetrical designs, and celebrities everywhere have been snapped wearing this trend on the red carpet.

With these helpful tips on what's going to be hot in 2009, there's no chance of looking out of style in the new year.
