Six months ago zip back dresses were everywhere on celebrities and on the catwalk including Marc Jacobs' SS09 collection and Victoria Beckham's debut fashion collection, however the world of fashion is a fickle place and we're now bored of zip backs and want more original uses for them.
Gone are the days of using zips to fasten our clothes, now we use them to as an outline on oversized collars or create zigzag patterns on our outfits. Marc Jacobs decorated skirts with zips while Jean-Charles de Castelbajac AW09 show featured zip sleeves, skirts and pockets all on one dress.
Celebs have gotten even more adventurous with Kate Perry zipping her boobs shut (not literally!) and Nicky Hilton trimming a giant flower decoration with a zip. Anne Hathaway's Met Ball dress used a zip to pull in tight the ruching detail at the waist of her Marc Jacobs dress.
Zips should now be anywhere but the back of your clothes. Diagonal zip trims look great but remember to avoid necklaces that will clash. Your zip is enough metal work for one outfit. On the same point avoid metallic shoes and bags and stick to block colours.
We love this River Island dress, £24.99 with zip detail on the shoulder. The block colour is so on trend right now and the fluorescent shade works with the 80s look we're loving at the moment. And you can't go wrong with a one shoulder dress!
If that zip is too subtle for you go all out with this Miss Selfridge dress £45. The peplum skirt is great for creating curves and we've spotted Beyonce wearing diagonal zips so that's good enough for us!
Finally if you want something a bit girlier try this Topshop top, £35. The ruffle neckline is a hit with celebrities like Girls Aloud's Nicola Roberts and that zip trim gives it a cool edge!
Remeber when it comes to zips the rule now is think decoration nor practical!
