Get ready for an 80s revival as shoulder pads come back into fashion.
Over recent years fashion lovers have had to endure many resurrections from the era of power dressing, Dynasty and Flashdance. Skinny jeans, leggings, drop-crotch harem pants and Wayfarer sunglasses have been appearing everywhere.
So one must ask how come it has taken so long for shoulder pads to re-emerge? Catwalks have shown shoulder pads by off-the-wall designers Gareth Pugh and Vivenne Westwood. Gareth Pugh showed pointy super heroine wings in his S/S 09 collections, whilst big-name fashion house Louis Vuitton's also went back in time with classic Eighties square padding. Proving that the shoulder is back in a big way.
Structure in the form of boyfriend jackets and boxed shoulder gowns is making a huge impact and is set to be a big trend of 2009. However, this trend is likely to take a while to reach the high street, with designers such as Marni and Balenciaga showing quite exaggerated and defined shoulder structure for now.
Extreme futuristic-superhero styles of shoulder has also been making the rounds of late. This is a real fashion-forward look that won't be seen in everyday and high street fashion.
This trend echoes a return to tailoring, which was a big trend for A/W 08. To achieve this look, for now a little goes a long way. So, before you dig out you're 80s hideaways at the back of the wardrobe, remember to keep shoulders structured and angulated. A tailored jacket will still help achieve this look in 2009.
