As we near the end of 2008, FemaleFirst has taken a look back at some of the fashion highlights of the year. From feminine ruffles to goth making a come-back, 2008 has been a huge year in fashion.
Models, trends and celebrities have all made a big impact on the fashion scene, which has made fashion fans everywhere hit the high street hard. If this year is anything to go by, 2009 is set to be an even better year for fashion and the trends we love to follow. Here is the final instalment of our A to Z of fashion:
U is for Underwear as outerwear:
2008 left behind the burlesque-inspired, boned and restricted clothing and welcomed a new wave of delicate lingerie-inspired dressing. Designers Christian Dior and Max Azria all shown elements of this within their collection, drawing on the soft elegance and nostalgia to the 1930s. Camisoles, slips and robes all became more than acceptable as everyday garments, and boho celebrities Sienna Miller and Kate Hudson have been spotted really embracing this trend, flashing a bit of bra in layered chiffon and lace.
V is for Vintage:
One of the biggest comebacks to hit this year was everything vintage. Every celebrity this year was happily showing off their vintage bargains, from top model Jamie Winstone to television presenter Alexa Chung. Anything and everything was in fashion when it came to vintage, as long as it was years old and owned by someones grandma once! The high street did of course try to replicate the trend with vintage-style lace and drop-waist skirts, but nothing will beat the real thing.
W is for Waist:
From skirts and trousers to belts, everything this year was happening around the waist. This trend wasn't suited to everyone, but it turned out to be one of the biggest trends of 2008. The high waisted pencil skirt was a popular favourite for many celebrities on the red carpet. US stars, Eva Mendes and Jessica Simpson worked this look on several occasions, showing off their fabulous curves. This is still a great look for the festive season coming up.
X is for Ex-job:
The big gossip from 2008 was the shock firing of Valentino's creative director Alessandra Facchinetti. She found out through the press that she had been fired by label founder, Valentino Garavani, just hours after her show at Paris Fashion Week. What followed was a war of words between Alessandra and Valentino. She was annoyed she'd been fired and the Italian wasn't taking any of it. So far things have settled down, but who knows what will happen come 2009.
Y is for Yellow:
Yellow has been the big colour of 2008 and will be even bigger come 2009. This year Christopher Kane, Giles and Ossie Clark all previewed trend on their catwalk. The main shades have been warm yellow tones and citrus. This year the biggest celebrity seen working the yellow trend was Rihanna, in a Giambattista Valli ruffle gown at the BET Awards.
Z is for Zips:
Detailing in 2008 was key to a lot of trends, and that is true with zips. They appeared on shoes, jeans and jackets and added a rocker chic to many a simple outfit. Kelly Osborn was snapped wearing zip detailed jeans and shoes on several occasions throughout 2008. This is a unique trend and the key point to it is a little goes a long way.
So, that is FemaleFirst's round-up of everything fantastic in fashion throughout 2008. Most of these trends are still popular now and are perfect to take anyone into a fashionable New Year.
