After Milan seemed somewhat subdued, we were hoping for a bit of fun and frolics at Men's Fashion Week in Paris, but alas it seemed that Paris was to follow suit by showing a range of dark and at sometimes depressing range of clothes.
Could it be that the fashion world is now showing signs of the recession as Paris went with austerity over extravagance?
Well thank goodness for the fabulous Jean Paul Gaultier, who sent his models flying down the runway with fuzzy Jimi Hendrix-style wigs.
Gaultier delighted the crowds with his mismatched gender fashion, with men sporting skirts and women wearing pants, not to mention the children he chose to star as well in his 1970s and 1980s London-inspired designs.
Although he stuck to a mostly black and grey colour palette, there were notably flashes of colour and added flourishes to his work. Most notably was the attention he paid to his duffle coats, by including leather trims and fine metal chains to the style of the jacket.
Hugo Boss, on the other hand seemed to reinforce the doom and gloom of the recession by presenting models with slicked back hair and tiny glasses down the runway.
Thin ties on white shirts, large capes and a colour palette of black, white and dark blue, were all a bit dark and depressing and all in all seemed to detract from the show itself.
On the lighter side of things, Kanye West made his debut for Louis Vuitton with his sneakers and woollen caps taking to the runway, signaling a new age for the luxury fashion house.
They did however stick to what they do best too and paraded a range of expensive bags down the runway, with models carrying huge totes, sometimes two at a time.
Japan's Yohji Yamamoto brought a very stylish close to the proceedings yesterday, by showing off some pyjama-like pants for men.
He also rather bravely chose models of all ages, shapes and sizes to don his work, which in addition to the PJ pants included long coats and shirts decorated in polka-dots and stripes.
With Comme Des Garcons Homme Plus, Thierry Mugler and Givenchy showing today, perhaps they will pick up the pace a little bit, and inject some much needed extravagance into the proceedings.
Check back on Monday for the rundown of men's fashion over the weekend, including the offerings from Viktor & Rolf, Hermès, Lanvin and Gareth Pugh.
