Labels including Versace (above) are not snapping up aligator skins anymore

Alligator skin bags and purses were once the height of style with the likes of Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss and Beyonce Knowles all been spotted with an It bag hanging off their arms but it seems this trend is another victim of the recession.

The high cost of bags, belts and shoes made from alligator fabric means that they are just not in demand now. The result? A surplus of alligators at the farms they are kept at, New York Magazine reports.

Things have gotten so bag that some farms are almost overrun with the animals.

Gerald Savoie Jr, who has over 60,000 alligators on his farm, told Houma Today: "This is the worst I’ve ever seen. It’s never been this bad. Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Versace, they’re not buying. And if they're not buying, we're not selling."

Luxist reports that Vermilion Gator Farms Inc. usually sells about 75,000 hides a year, but it hasn't sold one in a year and does not expect to sell a skin for a year on top of that.

Unless we want to see alligators take over the world (bit extreme we know!) we girls had better start snapping up those It bags fast, any excuse to go shopping! Come on Posh lead the way!
