New York, More catwalk hair trends for Spring/summer as hair products company Aveda showcase a youthful hair look adorned with handcrafted barrettes by lead stylist Odile Gilbert at the Rodarte Spring/Summer 2011 Fashion Week show in New York.
"The Rodarte hair look for this season is young and innocent. The body is full of natural-looking texture, the ends are straight, and a strong, swooping side part gives the hair a retro feel. The look is inspired by teenagers in the 1970’s, so the effect is very organic, adorned with handcrafted tree branch and leaf barrettes that make a statement." -Odile Gilbert for Aveda
How To Get The Look:
1. Prep damp hair with Aveda Brilliant™ Damage Control to protect hair from heat styling and brow dry straight with a Mason Pearson brush.
2. Using fingers for a slightly imperfect look, create a super-strong part on the left side of the head, parallel to the center of the right eyebrow. Spray liberally with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for shine and light hold.
3. Emulsify Damage Remedy™ Daily Hair Repair in hands to add lived-in texture and prevent breakage. Use fingers to tousle hair and enhance texture and body with Aveda Volumizing Tonic™.
4. Secure a thick barrette to the left side of the hair, just above the left ear. Set the look with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray.
What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look.
"Kate, Laura, and I wanted to create a hair look with an innocent, 1970’s-teenager feel. The naturally textured, organic feeling of the hair reflects the Rodarte collection this season, which is inspired by the natural beauty of Northern California. A beautiful barrette, inspired by giant Redwood trees, pulls the look together. The hair is tousled and full of body on top and through the middle but blunter and straighter on the ends-a very 1970’s aesthetic." -Odile Gilbert for Aveda
How could a woman achieve this look on her own
"This look is cute and playful, and very easy to recreate. Prep damp hair with Aveda Brilliant™ Damage Control, and blow dry straight. Use fingers to create an ultra-strong part on the left side of the head and spray with Aveda Volumizing Tonic™. Tousle hair with fingers and emulsify Aveda Damage Remedy™ Daily Hair Repair in hands for extra texture and body. Attach a thick barrette to the left side, just above the ear, and finish the look with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray." -Odile Gilbert for Aveda
What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing.
"The Rodarte Spring/Summer 2011 collection is inspired by Northern California, giant Redwood trees, and 1970’s suburban sprawl. For the hair, we wanted to create an innocent look reminiscent of teenagers in the 1970’s. For ornamentation, we made hand carved wood, branch, and leaf barrettes." -Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte
You’ve worked hard to reduce the environmental impact of your show each season with Aveda’s Green Backstage program by replacing bottled water with NYC tap water, eliminating the use of fur, serving organic/locally sourced food, and printing invitations on recycled paper. What does your accomplishment mean to you? How do you feel about the end results.
"Our collection this season is all about celebrating the landscape of Northern California, where we grew up. We love how the natural landscape there is protected and we were raised to appreciate the Redwood forests, the coastline along Big Sur, and Monterey bay. We believe in doing all we can to preserve the natural world. We always work in a manner that promotes ethical and environmentally sound production, and we believe that these practices should always be reflected in our show production. We are honored to say that Aveda is our partner in working towards a greener show." -Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte
