Gossip Girl's finest style icons: Blair and Serena

With the fourth season of the hit American show hitting DVD on 15th August, we take a little look at the fashion choices of the stylish Serena (Blake Lively) and beautiful Blair (Leighton Meester) to see what make them icons, but more importantly how we can copy their wardrobe!

Where we are used to seeing the simple, less-is-more styles from Serena, Leighton Meester's alter ego Blair Waldorf is more creative and colourful with her pattern clashing ensembles.

The trick to dressing like 'Serena' is finding a key, statement piece such as this gold, metallic blazer and building a look around it.

Notice the plain white t shirt with minimal striped detail; while this is very much a statement look this season, its presence is so subtle it compliments the jacket as opposed to clashing with it.

Keeping it minimal is the key to this look. There is an undeniable pop and sparkle to the outfit without it being over the top. For make up just a touch of mascara, blusher and clear lip gloss is all that is needed. Tie your hair back in Blake's trademark bun and throw on a chunky bracelet to accessorise (notice there is no necklace as this would pull the eye from the jacket), and you'll be looking like Lively in no time.

Again we see metallic threaded into this pretty, but not too dressy outfit worn by Blake. The hat works as statement piece and the rest of the look has a natural feel in both shades and attitude. The messy wavy hair do makes this the perfect daytime to evening outfit with just a touch up of the lippy and a ruffle of the locks.

Though we may see Serena in a lot of neutral tones, these shots from the latest serious show that Blake can still pull off bright and bold whenever she lights.

Team a bold colour with something less eye catching to make the statement piece stand out even more, just like with these wide fit pink trousers or casual yellow, strappy top.

Fashion intern Blair has a wonderfully complex style personality. Unlike Blake's character Serena, Leighton's Blair is more willing to take fashion risks and enjoys creating new styles with a miscelleny of what the best of high end fashion has to offer.

Bold prints are a favourite look for Leighton both on and off the Gossip Girl set. In this look we have a fruity theme happening with plenty or colour, depth and texture to complete the look. She has accessorised hard and it works well.

If you want to steal 'Blair's' style, you cannot be too afraid to put different colours and patterns together, especially if you're looking for a stand out walk-about-town look like this one in Paris.

If Serena is into stripes, then Blair is all about the spots. This ditzy, cute prom dress highlights the girly side to Leighton and is kept simple with a pair of black court shoes and gold buckle and a patterned (of course) handbag.

This look lets the clothes do the talking and so the less you do with your hair the better. A simple straight look like Leighton's will not take away from the outfit and will also show off your glossy locks.

Her time at W Magazine has clearly taught Blair a thing or two about light layers as we can see from her use of vintage design inspired tights and materials. This look is classic, demur and everything we love about Gossip Girl's budding fashionista.

You can achieve a similar look with a pair of bold, high-waist shorts and patterned tights (very trendy next season) and top off with a cute blouse (perhaps pussybow) and cardigan.
