The Wear & Care campaign from Ecover has been created to encourage people to make garment care part of their daily fashion and beauty routine, whilst ensuring the negative impact your garments have to the environment after purchase is minimised.
In a world of fast fashion, cheaply made garments are flying off the rails in shops and into the homes of UK consumers, before ending up in a landfill shortly afterwards as style dictates these items are no longer ‘on trend’ or are damaged in some way.
Laundry care also plays a big part in the environmental impact clothes have. Unnecessary harmful chemicals found in a large number of washing products end up in our water systems, causing further damage to the environment.
Ecover wants to help people to enjoy fashion, in a fun yet responsible way and have pulled together these top Wear & Care tips to help everyone make small changes towards a brighter, more stylish future!
Try not to buy any new clothes for a month. Resist the urge to go and splurge and save the money. Fast fashion may be cheap and accessible, but if you stopped spending the odd fiver here or ten pounds there, you would soon be able to afford one beautiful, more expensive item that will last season after season.
Invest in beautiful statement jewellery or luxury accessories. With the money saved from halting the quick fashion fixes you could be saving up for one gorgeous piece of jewellery that will turn a variety of outfits on their heads and make them look completely different every time.
Combatting stains as soon as they happen will help keep your clothes looking their best for longer. The Ecover Stain remover is the ideal secret weapon to tackle red wine splashes, grass, mud stains and other tricky marks like blood, leaving your clothes in perfect condition without the need for any harsh chemicals.
Limit your wardrobe. If you have a strict rule on garment numbers you will start to think more carefully before you buy an item and whether you actually need it. When you add anything to your wardrobe, make sure you lose an item from your wardrobe and donate it to charity or give to a friend or colleague. This way you will only make really necessary purchases and you won’t be throwing anything away. You may have had enough of your blue stripy top, but it’s a brand new addition to the wardrobe for someone else!
Think carefully about the laundry care products you use and the impact they are having on your clothes, your skin and the environment around you. Switching products doesn’t mean you have to compromise on performance either, Ecover’s range of laundry care products just as well as their competitors minus the nasties, and you can feel all warm and fuzzy knowing your washing isn’t harming anyone- least of all yourself. New laundry products, like the Ecover Laundry Gels, will clean most garments superbly at 30°C (towels, bedding and underwear are still best washed at a higher temperature). Where possible try using this setting, to ensure your clothes keep their shape, clean and help you save you money and reduce energy consumption.
Instead of going shopping for new clothes, invite your friends over for a ‘swishing’ party. The concept is simple, everybody brings a few unwanted items from their wardrobe (perfect if you’ve just bought some new clothes and need to streamline the wardrobe) and then you swap them with each other. Meaning no clothes are thrown away and everyone gets new gear!
Read the washing instructions label and ensure you use the right product for the wash. It might sound obvious but forgetting to check it can be the difference between an expensive and delicate item which lasts for a couple of washes, compared to the potential to last for years if you look after it carefully.
