Not a day seems to go by without news of a new fashion item made from recycled material but clothes made from cigarette butts are by far the craziest.

The idea to turn discarded cigarette ends into clothing came from Chilean designer Alexandra Guerrero, Cnet reports.

Alexandra and volunteers collect the cigarettes from the streets and sterilise them. They are then dried, separated and made into fabric. Toxins such as nicotine are removed.

The material left over is combined with wool to create the fabric used.

"This project began as an idea for my thesis," she told the blog Cool Hunting. "We always wanted to do sustainable design but we didn't want to do something that was already seen, so we started thinking of a waste that was unnoticed and then we thought of cigarette butts."

So far hats, gloves, sweaters and blankets have been made. They can be purchased from the Mantis website.
