Topshop snowman jumper (£50)

Topshop snowman jumper (£50)

A number of things spring to mind when we think of seasonal knitwear and usually it’s the annual Christmas jumper.

The words ‘tacky’ and ‘cringe worthy’ are often used to describe the traditional winter woolly, if not the phrases ‘worst present I ever received’ and ‘wouldn’t be seen dead in one’. I mean who can forget Colin Firth’s green reindeer jumper in Bridget Jones?

The festive design continues to grace more and more items of clothing though, not just jumpers; it’s on cardigans, tights, dresses, accessories and sleepwear, and in most cases (not all), it isn’t as hideous as it once was.

In fact novelty Christmas attire has actually become quite fashionable and even celebrities have been spotted wearing it, including Fearne Cotton, Kelly Rowland and Selma Blair.

So if you’re also feeling festive and brave enough to rock the look, then here’s how you can do it.

Top

This Miss Selfridge Barbie top doesn’t have the stereotypical features on like snowman, but it still has that Christmas edge to it. (£22.00)

Jumper

To dress this jumper up, you could wear it over a collared shirt and then team it with a bodycon skirt and tights. (H&M, £24.99)

You could go for the more obvious, traditional Christmas jumper otherwise, like the one from Topshop. The snowman has plastic buttons and a fluffy pom-pom on for added effect.

Cardigan

The best thing about this Uniqlo cardigan is that the pattern isn’t overly festive, which means you could actually get away with wearing it at any time of the year. (£14.90 reduced from £29.90)

Pinafore

The ASOS pinafore is a bit different to your typical jumper dress and also gives you the opportunity to play around a bit. Again, you could try adding a blouse or shirt underneath. (£40)

Jumper Dress

The design of this jumper is great for helping you dress festively but not overdo it. By placing the snowflakes at the bottom of the dress rather than having them as an all over pattern, it makes them more subtle. (Uniqlo, £19.90 reduced from £29.90)

Slipper socks

These are a great alternative to slippers and are equally as cosy. (Marks and Spencer, £15.00)

Scarf

This H&M scarf has pockets at the end which is  handy if you forget your gloves. It's also available in  classic red and white. (£9.99 reduced from £19.99)

 Hat (Dorothy Perkins, £12.00)

If hats aren’t your thing but still want to keep your ears warm, then there are always earmuffs. Primark currently have them in in a range of colours and patterns, starting at £2.50.

Leggings

If you want to jazz up a plain outfit, you could try knitted leggings. These ones from Amazon have a festive feel about them because of the snowflakes, however Aztec print can also have the same effect. (£9.99)

Socks

You can never have too many pairs of socks, so why not buy these and then wear them in the days running up to the 25th?! (Matalan, £4.00)

Pyjamas

Christmas pyjamas are definitely up there with the jumper and were also seen in Bridget Jones. (Matalan, £12.00)

Mittens

These would look fab with the Dorothy Perkins scarf. (ASOS, £8.00 reduced from £12.00)
