Queen Elizabeth

There have been a few suprising additions to the style icon list this year, with 2008 being no more of an exception to crazy trends.

Trends don't always come solely from designers, even the most unlikely source can inspire some of the biggest styles.

First to appear as one of the ultimate style of icons of 2008, is our Majesty the Queen. Renowned for her tweed, structured handbags and pearls, the Queen has inspired one of the most popular trends of 2008.

Even top model, Aygness Deyn claims to be big fan of the monarch's unique style, saying to Britain's Style magazine: "I love the queen. I love her Barbour jacket and wellingtons thing when she goes out walking her dogs. It's ladylike but a bit quirky".

The heritage trend has been spotted all over high street this year, with designers such as Alexander McQueen and D&G for fronting it on the catwalk.

It's ladylike but a bit quirky.

Even a touch of pearls can bring any outfit into trend this season.

Another even stranger style icon of 2008, is the big-haired, chain-smoking, sometimes musician, Amy Winehouse.

There is no disputing that Amy's distinctive hair style has recieved quite a lot of attention, and copy-cat beehives have popped up everywhere.

But a style icon?

British Vogue editor, Alexandra Shulman, on the Times Online, said that Amy has an 'exotic look which is instantly recognisable'.

She may be recognisable but her style of head scarves, grubby T-shirts and mini-skirts are hardly a trend within themselves.

The greatest fashion input Amy has given the world will probably be the reinvention of her amazing hair.

The gothic trend has been another huge trend of 2008, and has been mentioned many a time on FemaleFirst.

Chanelling your inner Morticia Addams has been a big part of 2008, with gothic lace and velvet.

Morticia Addams is quite a bizarre style icon but the trend has to come from somewhere.

Daisy Lowe is a huge supporter of this trend - pulling off a modern day, glossy Morticia look with pale skin and dark lips.

Finally, we have the ultimate style icon: Audrey Hepburn.

Most of her fans weren't even alive when Audrey was making movies, but her look of old-time glamour and sophistication is still keeping her one of the most stylish women of all time.

Even her pixie hair cut can be traced through the years, to 60s icon Twiggy to modern-day beauty Agyness Deyn.

Audrey will always be an undisputed style icon for years to come.
