Balmain SS09

Balmain SS09

Faded denim, shoulder pads and power dressing were all the range on the catwalks for spring and summer this year, which can only mean one thing; The 80s are officially back in fashion.

We've long had a love affair with the 80s and their pop prints, leg warmers and bright leggings, not to mention back combed hair, bad roots and a certain love of head scarves.

This season however, its the re-emergence of acid wash denim making a huge comeback in jeans, jackets, shirts and most prevalently dresses, which will have everyone talking.

We've already spotted Agyness Deyn, Lily Allen and Kate Moss working the 80s look lately, so you'll be in good company should you decide to give it a go.

Denim made an appearance at the House of Holland, Givenchy and Louis Vuitton catwalk shows, featuring a vast range of shades and styles. Henry Holland's ripped jean and crop top combination was a very clear nod to the 80s, while Givency's denim shirt was a much more relaxed nod the the era.

Sequins were also forecasted to stay around for another season, and this combined with some power dressing was the theme behind Balmain's SS09 show.

Their emerald encrusted dress, with very prevalent shoulder pads will prove an instant hit with celebs, and we can expect to see some catwalk copies appearing on the high-street very soon.

Although the 80s are set to make a huge impact on our fashion purchases this season, the key is to update it for the 00s, so that it doesn't look dated and copied.

As much as we love Madonna's 80s 'Like a Virgin' look, if we went out looking like that today, we'd look and feel ridiculous. Taking key elements from her look and working it in our own way, however is fine.

The head scarf can still be worked today, only worn with much sleeker hair and same goes with the leggings and crucifixes; they are pretty much timeless.

Leg warmers, however as much as we love them, just look ridiculous when worn in everyday life and lace fingerless gloves are only appropriate on Halloween, when you're trying to be a ghoul!

Here's our top picks for 80s fashion on the high-street, and don't be tempted to wear them all together at once!
