Can you bear to bare?

Can you bear to bare?

Miniskirts that belong in the 60s, shoulderpads we wished were left in the 80s, a clash of historic trends is nothing knew in our beloved world of fashion but the evolutionary mind of style means that 2010 will feel like we've bought a time machine and we don't quite know how to use it.

Will all fashion inspriation be taken from previous decades? Or will we finally be embracing a new era to celebrate the year of twenty ten and a 'no more fashion history' etiquette?

Let's take a walk into the future and see what's on the horizon for the exciting new year.

So, what's all over the catwalks for Spring/Summer? White, white and even more luxurious white. As clichés go, white is the new black. By summer, expect to see white everywhere, it is all over the catwalks, and soon to be all over our high street.

Unfortunately, for the larger and plumper of us, black is out, so no more hiding your lumps and bumps in black overalls - it's all about the clingy colours; white, yellow and nude.

The colour nude was flaunted in collections by Stella McCartney and Fendi, and as far as nudity goes - skin is in. In fact, the more skin you can bare this summer, the better. It's very rare that you see us at FemaleFirst flaunting and promoting the skimpy outfits ("what is she wearing? She MUST be cold") but hemlines are getting smaller, the one piece suit is out, and itsy bitsy teeny weeny bikinis are in.

But not to fear, there is good news in the pipeline for the future of fashion, 2010 is the year of comfortable footwear - ankle-breaking stilettos are being taken over by ankle-friendly kitten heels. What's that we hear? A thousand sighs of relief across the nation?

Kitten heels were seen by the likes of Chanel and Louis Vuitton, pumps and ballet flats will also be making a re-appearance.

Expect even more party dresses this year - but with a new twist. Most will appear with leather, glitter, fringing (think more cowboy than girly - Mulberry) and frills are all in. Cavalli and Fendi both stormed the catwalk with gorgeous Summer ruffles.

Shoulder pads are very much still a major part of early 2010, but in the form of Karl Lagerfeld's epaulettes (or just a fancy type of shoulder pads to us normal people).

Last season we cringed at the horrid late 90s trend of double denim - never ever ever will we succumb - but unfortunately, it seems that denim is still in. Equally jumpsuits are still all over the catwalks and everyone's favourites - genie pants - are still on the scene, and we're not even being sarcastic about this one.

Genie pants will return in 2010, and we are all rejoicing that we actually get to wear them in nice weather rather than freezing our ankles off in the snow. Hurrah!

Whether fashion is reinventing itself remains the larger question, up and coming trends suggest that there's a major historic element that is driving designers into bringing back the 60s, the 80s and the 90s.

It's easy to say that everything has been done before, but designers have promised us more practicality and more inspirational fashion choices for the start to the new decade.
