Just when you thought the world of fashion couldn't get more crazy during the recession, Selfridges' swimwear department have launched a £2,000 bikini, just in time for the summer rush.
Apparently they are celebrating a 33% rise in sales with the launch of the 'bling-kini' which according to Marie Claire, you can't even swim in!
The Anita, created by Pistol Panties, is coated in 5,000 Swarovski crystals and is a cross between a bikini and a swimsuit, joined only by a thin gold beaded rope.
Now, while we're willing to appreciate it's pretty, and yes, it does make some form of style statement, would you really splash out all that money on a bikini you can't even swim in?!
Well, surprisingly, there are already shoppers in place lined up to purchase the limited edition design, in the London, Manchester and Birmingham branches of the store.
Helen Attwood, Selfridges' swimwear buyer told Marie Claire: "Swimwear is summer's ultimate style statement. With all the right ingredients and adequate holding-in-pushing-up power a bikini can become a woman's best friend.
"Whether destined for St Tropez or South End, I hope Anita will provide our customers with the ultimate poser appeal this summer."
