Policemen are about to get a fashion make over after students from the London College of Fashion designed a new new uniform for them.

Winning designs in the competition, organised by the college and the Metropolitan Police, included an innovative cape based on on those worn by the Victorian police and women's trousers with an ajustable waistband.

The students were asked to come up with ideas as part of a uniform review by the Met. The winning designs will now be considered for production by experts.

Alice Burkitt, 20, whose team of five won the men's competition, told the BBC: "I would like to think we will see a London police officer wearing our cape.

"It would be great if that worked."

They made a yellow fluorescent cape from reflective material to make it appropriate for the 21st Century.

Dep Ass Com Steve Roberts said: "It is an idea brought back to life. It's something we can see officers wearing."

Women's winner Jude Cunningham, 21, said many officers complained about uncomfortable uniforms to her so she designed trousers which can be worn high or low on the waist.

She said: "I spoke to a lot of women police officers who wanted lower waists that would be more comfortable."

The review of the police uniform is a big job and is expected to continue until September.
