Legendary fashion designer Pierre Cardin, 91, staged a couture show in his Paris restaurant last night.
The 91-year-old fashion designer sent models down a runway in his Paris restaurant Maxim, his first show since 1996, under the label Maxim de Paris and said he enyoyed the "freedom" of not being restricted to the traditional fashion Week calendar.
He said: "I staged fashion shows for 60 years of my life, and now I want to stand on my own, to show when I feel like it. I no longer want to have any obligations.
"I'm at home here. I can decide what I want. I am free - I don't depend on anyone."
The collection featured garments including leather-detailed tuxedo jackets, a flowing black gown with cape sleeves and sweeping gowns accentuated with bows and ruffles.
The designer told WWD: "This is a modern collection - nothing too tight at the waist, no buttons or tricky details. It's free, as free as people and fabric should be."
Pierre was hopeful that his creations can help boost the flagging French economy.
He said: "If you make dresses at this level, rich women buy them. We have to get rich people to spend their money. People need to make a living - that's the message."
