Oscar de la Renta has slashed the guestlist for his Spring/Summer 2014 fashion show at New York Fashion Week by more than half.

The 81-year-old designer has decided to invite just 350 people to his showroom on West 42nd Street in New York City on September 10 to see his new collection because he believes it's better to have just a handful of top industry professionals present during the unveiling.

Speaking to WWD, he said: "When you do megashows, it loses the reason of why we're showing. [Anyone can] see the show on the Internet 20 minutes later.

"It's important for [certain industry professionals] to look at the clothes and see them. They shouldn't have to go through 30,000 people, and 10,000 who are trying to take pictures of all of those people who are totally unrelated to the clothes."

The fashion mogul also hinted that the drastic decision was made after learning that fellow designer Narcisco Rodriguez will be showing around the same time as him, and the pair are likely to use some of the same models, which could create an unnecessary scheduling conflict.

Oscar's show clashed with Narcisco's last season, resulting in models being delayed getting from his show to Narcisco's.

He explained: "I hate to inconvenience other people, as I hope other people wouldn't want to inconvenience me."
