Men are hiding clothes their partner to not give away how much they are actually spending on clothes, according to a new survey.
The study also found that more than a fifth of men 'never' clean out their wardrobe.
As part of ongoing research into the shopping habits of young men across Britain, MyVoucherCodes.co.uk has conducted a study of 1,071 men aged 18-35 in order to discover more about their clothes buying habits.
The study initially asked the respondents to the study how often, on average, they went clothes shopping in a year. They found that male respondents went clothes shopping an average of 15.3 times a year. Furthermore, when asked to estimate how much they spent a year on clothes shopping, the average worked out as £658.37.
According to the research, more than half of the respondents said that they had ‘hidden’ newly bought clothes from their partner on occasion. When these respondents were asked why they had hidden clothes, the majority said it was because their partner would be ‘angry’ at the money they had spent.
Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, said the following:
“We are always interested in finding out more about the buying habits of people across the UK, and this research was certainly insightful. Typically, stereotypes point towards women as being more likely to hide clothes, so it is interesting to see that a large percentage of men also keep their new purchases under wraps.”
Furthermore, 29 per cent of the respondents who said that they had hidden newly bought clothes from their partner said that they did so simply because their partner ‘had hidden clothes from them’ in the past; whilst 17% said it was because they knew their partner ‘wouldn’t like’ the clothes they had bought.
As well discovering how often men went shopping, the study also investigated how often men in the UK ‘discard’ old clothing. According to the results, more than a fifth of the men asked have ‘never’ discarded their old clothing; whilst a quarter said that they cleaned out their wardrobe ‘annually’.
Mark continued:
“It is slightly worrying that some men never clean out their wardrobes, after all, where do they store all of their new clothes? There are plenty of places where you can donate, or even sell, your unwanted clothes and make yourself a bit of cash; so it’s always worth bearing that in mind, as it can raise some pennies before you next hit the shops.”
