Men love spending money just as much as we do

Us women can have a bad rep for spending money on fashion and beauty items, but new research suggests that men aren't far behind us.

The study found that men are spending just £55 less than women on a monthly basis.

Yes, we may still be the biggest spenders with an average of £2,415.12 worth of purchases on hair and beauty products and new clothes over a year. That works out at £201.26 a month, but men are hot on our heels ladies. They are spending on average £1754.76 annually, or £146.23 a month, just £55 less than the women.

When it came to clothes, men were more inclined to shop for quality rather than quantity especially for key items like jeans, shoes and coats.

Women too were happy to splash out for classic items, but were tempted into cheaper stores for fashion staples where they could get more for their money.

On beauty items, men admitted to buying more than they have in the past with post shave balms and sprays a popular choice.

Hair products were also a big buy for the male respondents with gels, waxes and sprays all featuring as part of their spend.

One male who took part in the survey commented: “I wouldn’t go as far as slapping on a face mask every night but I definitely buy more beauty products than I used to. I can remember my dad’s shelf in the bathroom cabinet consisted of a bar of soap and a bottle of Old Spice but I have a cabinet full of products.”

One female respondent said: “Better dressed and better groomed men are much more attractive to a woman these days. I have been out shopping with my boyfriend before and on occasions he has been known to spend more than me on clothes and hair products. I love that he takes pride in his appearance.”

Another male added: “There’s so much choice on the High Street now for men –better than it used to be. Why wouldn’t I be tempted into spending more? I enjoy dressing well and will happily splash out on a item I want, and one that will last me a few years.”

A spokesperson for FreeDeliveryLand.co.uk, who conducted the research said: “Men’s fashion has probably become more popular in the last decade than it has over the past century so it’s no wonder that guys are spending more money on themselves.

“Their annual spend is certainly getting close to that of the women we spoke to, although whether it will ever overtake is another matter entirely. Somehow I doubt it.”
