Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP advice has been branded "complete bunk".
Professor Timothy Caulfield has spent three years studying the recommendations of the 42-year-old actress and other celebrity lifestyle "gurus", whose cleanses, vitamin supplements and colonic irrigation regimes have been adopted by followers around the world.
In his book 'Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything?', he concluded: "Paltrow is the perfect symbol of popular culture in our world right now. Providing advice is part of her brand ... she really seems to believe it, it's not just some kind of marketing ploy. I think she should be held to a standard and that standard should be science. But (her advice) is complete bunk. I dug and I dug and I dug - there is nothing to support it."
The professor - whose day job involves sitting on advisory boards, scrutinizing studies on stem cell research, genetics and obesity - added that vaginal steaming, something that Gwyneth recommends, is "harmful".
He said: "The claims made for it are wrong and it could even be harmful ...You shouldn't monkey with the bacterial flora down there."
Professor Caulfield also followed up reports the Duchess of Cambridge - the wife of Prince William - uses a facial lotion containing bee-sting venom to keep her skin looking youthful.
He said: "There at least it has a biological action, by causing micro-trauma. But there is no evidence to support it."
