There's nothing like reminiscing of fashion trends which have come and gone, usually with a little bit of cringing thrown in there too. But have you thought about the money spent on those fashion pieces?
From Bermuda shorts to 90s bomber jackets, the British devotion to fashion has burnt a hole in consumers’ pockets for decades – a £2.4 billion hole according to the latest research from VoucherCodes.co.uk.
The survey, which polled 1,000 women, revealed 80s favourite the shell suit is the fashion trend women most regret wearing, with nearly half voting it the number one fashion crime from the last two decades.
Velour tracksuits, made famous by WAGS like Coleen Rooney, came in second place, with a third of women admitting they regret rocking this comfy-casual look. Over a quarter of fashionistas will welcome next Spring’s trend for muted pastel shades, after voting neon club wear as their worst fashion fad – bringing it to third place in the list of fashion crimes overall. Meanwhile, one in five chose the double denim look, still sported by Miley Cyrus, and 80s accessories such as scrunchies and shoulder pads as their fashion faux pas.
Top ten fashion fad crimes:
- Shell suits
- Velour tracksuits
- Neon club wear
- Double denim
- 80s accessories
- School girl/ Britney Spear inspired outfits
- Gothic lace
- Tie-dye
- Jelly shoes
- Platform trainers
Despite a third of women admitting they look to celebrities and magazines for style inspiration, there are certain stars whose dress sense is a definite no go for followers of fashion. UK women voted Lady Gaga the worst dressed celebrity, with a quarter claiming they weren’t fans of her eccentric sense of style. Ex-glamour models Jodie Marsh and Katie Price came second and third in the list of celebrities receiving 23 and 13 per cent of votes respectively in the poll of who’s made the most fashion mistakes.
Anita Naik, consumer editor at VoucherCodes.co.uk commented: “We all like to experiment a little when it comes to trying new fashion trends, but what can sometimes be in fashion one day is often out the next. With shops stocking new season clothes, tempting people who want to be on trend many Brits are sucked into buying the latest fashions regardless of whether they fit or suit them.
“To avoid this, why not go shopping with a friend and ask them to play devil’s advocate, on the promise you won’t fall out with them.”
