Research conducted by online fashion broker ChampagneandLemonade.com has revealed that women in the UK regularly wear more than one dress size – nearly half of those surveyed revealed they wear clothing spanning more than one dress size.

The UK fashion scene has been heavily focused on size for decades and the image of a slim sized 8-10 woman is portrayed through advertising and media as the ideal size. One in three of the women surveyed by ChampagneandLemonade.com said they felt embarrassed by the size of some of the clothing they own – even if it is not their regular size.

The sizing of clothing by different stores and designers varies so much that British women are rarely one size in all. Only one fifth said they could confidently buy the same size item from more than one store. Amazingly, over half of women in Britain who are usually a size 12 admitted they would not buy a larger size even if it fitted them better.

Isabelle Hartley-Nias, MD of ChampagneandLemonade.com said: “It is clear from these results that sizing on the UK high street varies greatly between manufacturers and designers. It is really hard for women to know their exact size. The key thing is to ignore labels and buy what feels and looks right.”
