It appears that young British women are turning their backs on the standard bikini this Summer when hitting the beach, as a new study from the UK’s leading discount website has revealed that more will be sporting a one-piece swimsuit than a bikini this year.
The study, conducted by www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, polled 1,489 young women aged 18-30, in a bid to discover more about the purchasing decisions of Britons when it comes to going on holiday and after noticing an increase in searches for ‘swimsuits’ onsite.
The young women taking part were asked whether or not they had been, or were going on, a beach holiday this summer; to which over two thirds said “yes”.
These women were then asked more about their clothing purchases related to their beach holiday. When asked what style of swimsuit they had mostly worn, or intended to wear, the majority explained that they were or would be sporting a ‘one-piece swimsuit’ on the beach or by the pool.
Just over a third explained that they would be wearing a ‘bikini’, whilst the remaining 10 per cent explained that they would be wearing, or had worn, a ‘tankini’ this summer.
Of the young women who were sporting a ‘one-piece swimsuit’, the majority explained they were a ‘more flattering option than a bikini.’ In contrast, 22 per cent, simply felt that swimming costumes were ‘more fashionable’ than other forms of swimwear.
When asked if they felt ‘body confident’ on the beach, just a fifth of the women taking part said “yes;” with the overwhelming majority saying “no”. Furthermore, three quarters explained that they had purchased a type of swimwear that would ‘enhance’ their body shape: with over half of these explaining that their swimsuit was ‘slimming.’
When asked how much they had spent on swimwear for their holiday this year, the average amount stated by respondents was £66.30. Furthermore, each respondent had bought an average of 3.4 new pieces of swimwear this year.
Mark Pearson, Chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, commented on the findings: “To see that so many young women are opting for a one-piece is testament to how the fashion scene has changed; no longer is a one-piece a dowdy option, there are plenty of styles out there to suit all shapes and sizes, and even ones that nip you in, in the right places!”
He continued:
“Spending over £66 on swimwear can seem steep, but a good swimsuit doesn’t come cheap. We’d always advise looking for discounts on swimwear wherever possible though; there are plenty of opportunities to save out there, so we’d always recommending doing a quick search online before purchasing.”
