Dressing for work can sometimes be a difficult task

Dressing for work is sometimes a struggle, where do you find the line between comfort, practicality and smart.

New research from TK Maxx and Cancer Research UK to support the 'Give Up Clothes for Good' campaign has shown that we've changed the way we dress for work, with many men shunning suits and women don't like to wear dresses.

Fashion commentator and trend forecaster, Amber Butchart offers the following tips to streamlining our clothing, and creating the perfect capsule wardrobe, fit for in and out of work:

1. Be honest with yourself. If something doesn’t fit and hasn’t fitted for the last 3-6 months then donate the item.

2. Build a wardrobe full of interchangeable pieces - work with a limited colour palette that you know suits you. Tailoring is really important when building a capsule wardrobe - properly tailored pieces will cost a bit more but will make you look and feel better, and are also built to last.

3. If you have pieces lying around that don’t fit that you’ve been meaning to alter then now is the perfect time to donate them - if you don’t like it enough to alter it immediately, it’s not worth keeping.

4. Certain trends are enduring and are always present in some form, to the point where they’ve become classics. Nautical and military looks are always found on catwalks before filtering down to the High Street, so items like the Breton top, the trench coat or tailored jackets with a military feel are worth investing in.

5. Metallics and brights are for evening wear as they stand out and instantly dress up items like jeans, so look out for accessories or tops in gold, silver, or a bright colour that works with the rest of your wardrobe.

6. Jeans are arguably the nation’s favourite item. They’re a great multi-purpose item that you can dress up or down: wear them at the weekend at home, or to the office with a smart jacket, and you just need to add a sparkly top or heels to make them work for a night out. It means you just need a few key pieces to change your look instead of investing in a whole new wardrobe.
