Fake designer clothing has officially died as new research shows people believe that the real thing is now more affordable than ever.
It seems that purchasing ‘knock off’ gear is on the way out, as 52% of consumers who claim to have purchased ‘fake’ designer clothing in the past admit that they no longer do so as the real thing is more ‘affordable’ than it used to be.
But thrifty Brits are still after a bargain, even when it comes to the designer fashion, as 62% of those who claim to wear designer clothes admit that they never pay full price for them.
They avoid paying full price by waiting for seasonal sales, discount codes and shopping at outlet stores too.
Those that had never purchased fake designer clothing were asked, ‘Why wouldn’t you buy fake goods?’ which revealed the following top five responses:
1. Poor product quality
2. The real thing is easier to access
3. Prefer to have the real thing for the sake of conscience (telling friends etc.)
4. Don’t want to break the law
5. Believe that the real thing is affordable enough
Matthew Wood of vouchercloud, who conducted the study, made the following comment:
“Both selling and purchasing knock-off designer gear is illegal in Britain, but with wheeler dealers such as Del Boy being such iconic figures, is there a relaxed view of this amongst consumers? The results of our survey suggest that consumers are putting poor product quality ahead of morality when it comes to shopping and don’t see fake goods as illegal.
“It’s worrying that such a high figure don’t regard buying fake goods as a criminal act. If there’s no market for criminals then they can’t thrive. It’s good to know that people are viewing designer clothing as more affordable though. Different avenues such as outlet stores, seasonal sales and of course discount codes are making them more accessible to your average consumer.”
