Forget Olivia Palermo and Cara Delevingne, when it comes to style inspiration, Brits now want to dress like Kate Middleton.

In a survey that delved into style and shopping habits, 1 in 3 women voted the Duchess of Cambridge the best dressed in 2015, with a further 1 in 5 claiming Holly Willoughby was most stylish.

Alicia Kite of Alicia Kay Style, who commissioned the survey, comments, "Kate has become a fashion icon thanks to her classic and elegant style. She knows how to make the most of her wardrobe and reworks her existing outfits to make them appropriate for different occasions."

But despite admiring Kate's style, British women don't know where to start when it comes to their own wardrobes. 58% of women say they only occasionally feel good in what they are wearing and 23% say they think most of their clothes make them look fat. Women also have an average of nine items in their wardrobe that they have never worn.

Thankfully Brits have a boost in confidence at Christmas time, with 27% of women saying they feel most confident in party wear. And women aren't afraid to splash the cash on a Christmas outfit either, the average woman spends £150 on Christmas party wear - the third highest spend of the year after wedding outfits and holiday clothes.

But wardrobe coach, Alicia says there's no need to splurge to look good at Christmas, "It's easy to make your little black dress perfect for the Christmas season and you can even make yourself look slimmer. Add a necklace that sits at your tummy button to elongate your body and therefore looks like you've lost a few pounds."

As for shopping with confidence, Alicia recommends, "Plan before you shop, don't impulse buy or buy something because of its hanger appeal. Instead, consider whether the garment suits you and what you already own that you can wear it with. If there's nothing in your existing wardrobe to compliment your new purchase, put it back on the rail!"

But despite admitting they don't feel good in most of their clothes, British women still ranked themselves more stylish than their French, Italian and Spanish counterparts.
