American InterContinental University (AIU) London hosted its exclusive 2012 Student Fashion Show last week.
The fashion show and designs were based on the theme of Upcycle - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Design students worked to an Upcycling brief where they were asked to use “’waste’ materials or ‘useless’ products” to create garments of “better quality or greater “environmental value”. Garments were made out of recycled materials, including leather from a sofa used as sleeves in menswear.
The glamorous evening where key industry figures from organisations such as Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, Bloomsbury Publishing, the Textile Institute, Fashion Monitor, Warehouse, GWIIN, and Aethics were in attendance, included live music, drinks and canapés reception, the fashion show of exciting designs set to music, plus exclusive goody bags including items from event sponsors, L’Oreal, Shu Uemura, Penhaligons and PopChips.
The runway exhibited designs from year one, two and three students, menswear and womenswear, who worked creatively and conceptually in producing work that is surprising, interesting, contemporary and directional, embodying their personal philosophies about fashion design.
Students in the Fashion Branding course on the BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing degree have been working on a live project with fashion company Aethic which sells a sunscreen which is focused on ingredients that do not damage the delicate marine life such as living coral.
Student prizes included a cash prize from Vilene Freudenberg, a prize from the company Aethic and an internship with fashion company Lipsy.
Inspired by Gareth Pugh, the makeup and hair was clear, clean and crisp with geometric sharp shapes and lines added to facial features. All was executed by The Session School and Electric Hair.
Gill Stark, Dean of Fashion, AIU London said:
“I am delighted to see the results of this term’s work on the theme of sustainability. The students have taken on the challenges of sustainable fashion with an impressive mixture of responsibility and creativity – and sometimes with a sense of humour! We have been lucky enough to work with several industry sponsors again this term, and we thank them for their continued enrichment of our students’
education. Our work is also enriched through our work with FSSA Zambia. Money raised so far by our students for this wonderful charity has been used to educate 50 young people in Zambia."
Proceeds from the event will benefit FSSA Zambia, funding for Secondary School Assistance in Zambia. For more information, please visit www.fssazambia.org
