The stylish Mrs Kennedy and the once Princess of Monaco received 37% and 35% of the votes respectively, with the newest royal and fashion's BFF Kate Middleton securing third place with 33% in the poll.
New research by Kelkoo, the online shopping comparison site, also reveals that over two thirds of Brits (67%) love seeing their First Ladies wearing accessible, affordable and highstreet brands so as to make it easier to copy their style.
Kate has been commended for her effortless blend of wearing names including Alexander McQueen to brands Zara, Reiss and was even papped heading out of a Topshop store last week.
Chris Simpson, Kelkoo CMO comments: "Whilst it’s clear that the timeless elegance of Jackie Onassis and Grace Kelly has continued to inspire fashion for decades, the advantage for shoppers in 2011 is that the rise of online shopping and today’s First Ladies wearing high-street fashions means it’s easier than ever to emulate the style of these fashion icons."
26% of those asked even admitted to having recently purchased an item worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, who often favours highstreet over high end designers. Unsurprisingly, the new royal topped the list as to who most Brits are influenced by at the moment (73%), followed by Michelle Obama with 19%.
Copy cat fashion and recycling are hot topics in fashion this year given the economic recovery, giving our purses the much needed chance to recover.
Some polled admit to spending a staggering £900 on highstreet copy cat clothing (52%) to look like their favourite First Lady and 5% claim to by the designer real-deal. 13% even said that they had bought the said item without three hours of their style icon wearing it.
The poll discovered that 45% of women appreciate First Ladies who recycle and re-wear their clothes just like the rest of us and 35% say it gives the impression that they are not too extravagant with money.
We've all got our style icons, those we look to if we're searching for a new trend or hairstyle. 16% of us even take in a picture of their chosen First Lady to the hairdressers to achieve their do.
It would seem that First Lady fever is getting right under our skin as 15% admit that they have used beauty products used by the lovely ladies and 5% keep a scrapbook of their looks for keeping up-to-date records of their trends.
Perhaps a little excessive ladies? As much as following fashion can be fun, don't forget to set your own trends too!
