Though it may sound odd, increasingly more and more mums that are feeling young at heart are dropping the traditional attire that comes with the natural aging process in favour of outfits and trends inspired by their daughter’s wardrobes.
Most obvious is the most famous mother-of-the-bride Carole Middleton. Here is a woman that wowed at her daughter Kate’s wedding in April and clearly has some serious style of her own.
Since then, Carole seems to have got caught up in Kate mania along with the rest of the world and come to rely on Kate and her equally famous sister Pippa in the fashion department.
In mimicking their daughters’ trends and behaviours, mums are also reflecting what society is projecting
From similar earthy toned tops at the Festival of British Eventing to LK Bennett nude pumps for a night out, Carole has been putting the rest of the world to shame in copying her daughter’s simple yet elegant styling, and she’s not the only mum that it at it.
Recently 50-year-old Carol Vorderman was spotted at the races with her daughter in pretty many identical outfits. Across the pond even Madonna looks as though some of her looks come from her daughter Lourdes and even the Kardashian clan are at it!
This ‘trend’, if that is what we can call it, is apparently more common than we would first imagine and research conducted by the Temple University, Philadelphia shows that not only mums would like to be like their daughters, but also the impact that adolescents have on their parents is stronger than we would believe.
The researchers, whose findings will appear in the Journal of Consumer Behaviour, questioned 343 mothers and daughters with the average ages of 44 and 16 respectively.
Results show that if the mum felt younger, with good fashion awareness and views her daughter as having good style then she will in fact copy the habits.
On the other hand, if the daughter sees herself as being older or more mature and is interested in fashion herself she is less likely to see her mother as a role model.
In mimicking their daughters’ trends and behaviours, mums are also reflecting what society is projecting as well-maintained appearances and youthfulness become increasingly more important the older women become.
It comes as no surprise therefore, women who are feeling the pressure and expectation to look and dress younger, take their inspiration from one of the closest women to them in their lives: Their daughter.
