The 38-year-old singer opened New York Fashion Week with a funky, streetwise collection that paid tribute to Op-Art, naughty school uniforms and London’s Vivienne Westwood.

The collection is labelled LAMB, short for Love, Angel, Music, Baby - the title of another of her successes, her first solo album.

The singer and her stylist Andrea Lieberman won over fashion insiders on the opening day of the annual event with their mix of retro and modern designs, with a few outfits also showcasing Stefani's love of costumes.

Her collection included mini-dresses, in 'wet look' sequins, leopard-prints and 60’s-look 'target' patterns and chequerboard-prints that were worn with matching headscarves, knotted under the chin just like the Queen, and steel-heeled ankle-boots.

Gwen Stefani is originally the lead singer of the band, No Doubt. She has recently gone solo, presenting us with music videos that are as much a fashion as a music presentation.

Her innovative fashion range was launched in 2005 and has been described as a'combination of Jamaican rastafarians, English school girls and Orange County teens'.

Stefani says of the range: 'I make the clothes for myself, clothes I'd want to wear. I want clothes that have quality and style.'

Her collection was met with a great deal of appluse from fellow celebrities including Eve, P Diddy and Sophia Bush. Stefani, who is married to the British rock musician, Gavin Rossdale, of Bush, took her bow as a model mum, with the couple’s first child, son Kingston, 18-months-old, wearing a pair of miniaturized head-phones.

New York Fashion Week, the first round of the international designer shows for spring/summer 2008, continues until September 12th and will be followed by London Fashion Week which opens on Saturday, September 15th.
