Will you be borrowing fashion from your friends?

New research from a celebrity fashion website has revealed that more than a third of women borrow fashion items from their friends with no intention of giving them back and more than a tenth admitting to feeling ‘jealous’ about their friend’s wardrobe.

The study, conducted by www.MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, polled 1,328 women aged 18 over and initially asked them if they ever borrowed fashion items from their friends, to which the majority, 91%, said ‘yes’. The respondents were then asked to choose, from multiple answers, which fashion items they tended to borrow the most from their friends; selecting all that applied from a list of possible answers.

The top 10 fashion items that women borrow the most from their friends, according to the results, are as follows:

  1. Dresses
  2. Jackets
  3. Shoes
  4. Cardigans
  5. Tops
  6. Trousers/ Jeans
  7. Bags
  8. Jewellery
  9. Make up
  10. Skirts

Saving money is the main enforcer behind borrowing, whilst some prefer their friend's wardrobe to their own.

35% admitted that they have borrowed clothes with no intention of giving them back, thinking that they will forget about the item or because they think the piece looks better on them.

Bobbie Malpass, Editor at MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, commented:

“I am not surprise to see that many women borrow clothes from their friends with no intention of giving the items back. If we had to track down all the clothes and accessories  we borrow and exchange between friends I’m sure it would become apparent how many items we never see again.

"Swapping clothes with friends and borrowing items are definitely great ways to cut down on the cost of shopping if you have a friend the same size as you. There is nothing better than being able to expand your own wardrobe by sharing with a friend.”

The study also found that 14% of the total respondents admitted to feeling ‘jealous’ of a friend’s wardrobe.
