200 people were rescued during this summers tragic inland flooding, in the UK, thanks to the RNLI crews. Over 3500 times the RNLI lifeboats were launched, and the charities lifeguards helped nearly 8500 people on beaches between June and August, which was revealed in figures released yesterday.
Over £122 million is the annual running cost for the organisation (approximately £335000 a day), however it relies entirely on voluntary contributions and legacies for income, and receives no funding form the government.
Friday 25th January 2008 is the charities national fundraising day and for this, RNLI are asking members of the public to respond to its own SOS call and start preparing for it.
RNLI SOS call that this day of the National fundraising is very important and want as many people, whatever age, to get involved. They urge the public to get creative and come up with new ways of making money for the charity. You could do a hundred cartwheels in a row, bake the worlds biggest cake, or sit in a traditional baked bean bath.
Anne Maton, fundraising manager at the RNLI says RNLI SOS day is our national fundraising day, it is a fun day with a serious purpose and it is critical to get everyone's support no matter how young or old. At sea, around the coast, on the beach or 50 miles inland, the RNLI provides a vital service for everyone. We rely absolutely on donations and fundraising to provide our 24-hour lifesaving service.
