Today (04.10.07), TripAdvisor®, the world’s largest travel community revealed London’s public transport system was voted best, after the results of a survey of more than 800 travellers worldwide were revealed, despite also being considered the most expensive for the second year. New York was second and Paris third favourite. London taxis and the Underground were also voted the best among the world’s major cities.

The city voted for as having the worst public transportation system was Los Angeles.

Eighty-three percent of respondents said they use public transportation when they are on vacation. Thirty-five percent said they use it during leisure time in their local area. Twenty-two percent of respondents use public transport to get to and from work. Almost one quarter of travellers surveyed (24 percent) said a destination’s public transport system is a “major consideration” in determining where they choose to visit.

According to 43 percent of respondents. Travellers want public transport to go everywhere they want to go and say this is the most important thing to them about a public transportation system. Whereas twenty-nine percent rated safety as their top priority and 17 percent feel proximity to where they are staying is most important. Due to environmental concerns thirty-one percent said they occasionally choose public transportation over driving.

Michele Perry, director of communications for TripAdvisor, said “For the second straight year London and New York were tops for public transit among travellers. As they also rate as the most expensive among travellers, its proof that even when it comes to riding a bus or a subway, you get what you pay for.”
