More and more women are opting to hit major events like awards shows and even weddings wearing a suit rather than a gown, and while some are slamming this alleged "defeminisation" of women, we know that couldn't be more wrong. The following women have absolutely rocked a tailored suit in the last few years, bringing a new wave of femininity to the media.
Elsie Fisher
While most young teens would want to spend their first big awards season wearing the most luxurious gowns available, Eighth Grade star Elsie showed that she wasn't afraid to be a little different as she scooped the Critics Choice Award for Best Young Actress in a Thom Browne suit adorned in mini bow ties. She teamed the look with black nails, dark eye make-up and patent leather brogues.
Cara Delevingne
The Her Smell actress raised eyebrows when she broke with tradition by attending Princess Eugenie's wedding last year in a figure-hugging Emporio Armani suit complete with tails, heels and a stunning Chanel top hat. It was very much against the dress code, but rumour has it she did get permission before attending so was in no danger of being turned away.
Angelina Jolie
If anyone tries to tell you that suits aren't feminine, just show them this picture of Angelina Jolie on the red carpet at the 2014 BAFTAs. She donned a Saint Laurent ensemble with an open white shirt, undone necktie and satin ribbon detailing on the skinny trousers. It's arguably our favourite look from the Oscar winning actress ever.
Lady Gaga
She's never one not to stand out, but the 25th annual Elle Women in Hollywood celebration last year saw a divisive audience over Lady Gaga's choice of attire. She opted for an oversized Marc Jacobs suit as a statement against Hollywood's obsession with women's appearance and as a protest against sexual assault. She addressed her choice in her speech, admitting that it didn't find favour with her stylists. But that just makes us love it even more.
Sandra Oh
Suits are generally way comfier than dresses, that's just a fact. But do you know what's even more comfortable than a suit or a dress? A jumpsuit. Sandra Oh donned the sensational G. Label Elgin Tuxedo jumpsuit with Alexandre Birman Clarita trainers (because partying is easier in sensible footwear) at the Golden Globes afterparty this year, following her Best TV Actress win for Killing Eve.
Janelle Monae
This is certainly a twist on the classic pinstriped suit if ever we saw one. Janelle Monae accepted the Billboard Women in Music Trailblazer award last year in a grey Gareth Pugh one-piece with chaps-effect flaired trousers, major shoulder padding and a waist cinching belt. We can't work out how on earth one puts something like that on, we just know we want one.
Ellen Page and Ruby Rose
These two queer icons regularly wear suits to awards shows, but this picture from the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival (which Ruby shared on Ellen's 29th birthday the following year) is just amazing. Two of our favourite women redefining what the power suit is while still looking ultra glamorous from head to toe.
