Julia looks chic in all black at the Victoria's Secret fashion show

Julia Restoin Roitfeld may very well be the daughter of legendary former Vogue Paris editor Carine Roitfeld, but she’s certainly a fashionista in her own terms too.

And we suppose it comes naturally when you’ve been surrounded by fashion your entire life – her father, Christian Restoin, founded clothing brand Equipment and Tom Ford is classed as a close family friend.

Plus, she’s French. And we all know how effortless and chic their wardrobes are.

But she insists: “I’m not that creative, I dress pretty classically. Just pieces that will last for a while that aren’t really trendy but aren’t out of trend at the same time. It’s all about having good-quality key pieces and all about having the right mini black dress for day,” she tells brand new magazine Clique.

Describing her love for the little black dress she says: “It just goes with everything and depending on what I have to do and how much I have to run around, I pair it with a pair of Manolo Blachnik ballet flats or I wear it with heels – there’s a pair of Valentino Mary-Janes that I love.”

Whilst she may have a designer filled wardrobe, she knows the high street too: “I find Zara grown-up and timeless.” Much like the rest of us then.

Wardrobe staples are the key to Julia’s style, so of course she has plenty of trench coats: “I’ve got trenches in patent leather, leopard-print fur, a classic Burberry… They have a timeless elegance.”

And elegance is important when it comes to leather skirts too: “I love a leather skirt. But it can’t be super-short, or it just ends up vulgar. You have to pick your battles.”

But a sheer black piece can certainly exude the right amount of sexiness: “I love sheer black – great for subtle sexiness. I adore lingerie so I like to show off my bra.”

Speaking of French style, something we all try to emulate but somehow don’t have the same finesse, Julia says: “It seems to me that the French have this simple elegance. We never over-accessorise or are overly done.

“I think the French elegance is in the way we hold ourselves and the way we walk and talk. Sometimes that can come across as a bit pretentious – we have a reputation for being a bit snobby – but it’s more than just the way we dress.”
