Geri Hallwiell tops a poll of the most iconic dresses of the past 50 years reveals a study conducted by an online fashion retailer.

Due to the success of the new part of their site entitled ‘Fashion Inspiration’, online retailer OffersSupermarket.co.uk conducted research of 1,212 women to discover which celebrity dresses they believe to be the most Iconic of the past 50 years.

The research commissioned by offersSupermarket.co.uk reveals that the most iconic dress of the past 50 years is Geri Hallwiell’s Union Jack dress worn in 1997 to the Brit Awards with 82% of those asked agreeing. 79% of those polled felt that Liz Hurley’s safety pin dress is the most iconic dress.

According to the study commissioned by OffersSupermarket.co.uk, here are the top 10 most iconic dresses of the past 50 years:

1. Geri Hallwiell - Union Jack dress - 82%
2. Liz Hurley - Versace safety pin dress - 79%
3. Marilyn Monroe - White dress - 74%
4. Audrey Hepburn - Black dress and pearls in Breakfast at Tiffany’s - 67%
5. Lady Gaga - White outfit and wig worn to the Brit Awards - 63%
6. Princess Diana - Wedding dress designed by The Emanuel’s - 58%
7. Kylie Minouge - Gold hot pants - 56%
8. Jennifer Lopez - Sheer green Versace dress worn to the Grammys - 53%
9. Bjork - Swan dress worn to the Oscars - 49%
10.Cindy Crawford: Red Versace dress worn to the Oscars - 44%

More than a fifth, 23%, believe a dress can only be iconic if it is created by a designer, while 31% think it is the celebrity that makes a dress iconic. 62% agree that a dress needs to be ‘quirky’ to be iconic, compared to 16% of think the design needs to be ‘simple.’

More than a third, 36%, agree that pop star Michel Jackson is fashion icon; while 11% said he was a ‘fashion disaster.’  

Eve Atkins, founder of OffersSupermarket.co.uk, has said,

"Everybody remembers the moment Geri Hallwiell hit the stage in that Union Jack dress. The dress made everybody watching the Brit Awards feel patriotic, plus she looked amazing. I was shocked to release that it was simply a tea towel sewed on to a basic dress, with no designer involved."
