Despite weeks of nothing but praise for her style it seems the Michelle Obama fashion backlash has started and the first to complain is Oscar de la Renta.
Michelle has been applauded for her loyalty to American designers but switched to some European labels for her husband's tour of Europe including a dress and cardigan by Azzedine Alaïa, tops by Moschino, and a top by Etro.
While it may seem appropriate to wear European labels while on European soil Oscar de la Renta does not agree, New York magazine reports.
The designer said: "Our industry right now is having a very difficult time. I think it would be great if the First Lady dressed in American styles. There are a lot of talented people here too."
He was also not happy about her decision to wear high street either, telling WWD: "I think I understand what [Obama and her advisers] are doing, but I don’t think that is the right message at this particular point... I don’t object to the fact that Mrs. Obama is wearing J. Crew to whatever because the diversity of America is what makes this country great. But there are a lot of great designers out there. I think it’s wrong to go in one direction only."
"You don’t," he added definitively, "go to Buckingham Palace in a sweater."
It wasn't all negative though, he added: "Look, she has such great looks that if she put on a potato sack, she would look great."
Poor Michelle probably wishes she could just wear what she wants in peace without it becoming an international issue.
