The fashionable First Lady showed off some expensive diamond earrings during a state dinner in Mexico City, and apparently this has upset the people of France who are currently reeling from the effects of the recession.
According to Marie Claire, Carla's actions have caused enraged voters because France is currently experiencing a low employment rate and the average worker is just earning £8 a hour there.
The couple aren't going to win any voters by staying in the luxurious El Tamarindo Beach and Golf Resort, which is rumoured to cost a staggering £3,100 a night.
Where Carla was once applauded for her lavish and chic style, people are now reportedly shunning the pair and even nicknaming Sarkozy, President Bling-Bling.
In the past he has been known for favouring expensive brands, but since he married former model Bruni in February last year, they have made an effort to tone down their lavish lifestyle.
Oh dear, maybe it's time to tone it down a bit further and start rumaging around charity shops instead?
