Britney Spears kick started the crimp trend at the VMA's last month and since then, Madonna and Lindsay Lohan have both been spotted with a crimped barnett.
The crimped look was first spotted on the catwalk earlier this year, with Luella showing her 'gothic witch' look to the fashion crowds. Now celebs are channeling the look into their style, with fashion pioneer Britney leading the way.
We show you how to replicate the look...
1. Firstly buy yourself some crimping irons. They are inexpensive and you will probably have some knocking around the house, from when crimping was first big in the 1980s.
2. Separate your hair into sections, making sure you don't separate big chunks of hair, as this will give you a less distinctive crimping pattern. Brush or comb each section of your hair to ensure that it's knot free and place the crimping iron close the scalp. Hold in place for a few seconds and release, working your way down each section of hair.
3. Make sure that when you are crimping close to the scalp that you hold it for longer than when crimping the ends, otherwise your hair will dry out due to the heat, and you're more likely to get split ends.
4. After crimping each section, use a clip to hold your hair out of the way, to make sure you get a clean crimping pattern and so that your hair will not get tangled.
5. Assess each section of hair after crimping to make sure that it is crimped to the desired effect- you may have to redo a section, if it has not crimped as well. Don't panic though, just brush out lightly and repeat the process again. If you want to look like Britney, this kind of attention to detail is essential.
6. Finally, let each clip down to look at your finished style. Spritz lightly with hairspray to ensure that the crimping holds, but don't lay it on thick, or it will look unnatural and you probably won't be able to move your head!
Top Tip:
If all that sounds like a very fussy process and you'd rather just braid your hair and go, then you can achieve a similar look.
1. Firstly shampoo and dry your hair as normal and then separate it into small sections, using a pick comb.
2. Braid each section as tight or as loose as you want to get the desired crimping effect.
3. Place a secure band around each section and leave to set, making sure that you don't wind the sections too tight or they will become frizzy rather than crimped.
4.Release your hair from the braids and run your fingers through, making sure your hair does not become tangled.
5. Style your hair as desired and again spritz lightly with some hairspray.
