Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn excelled in many roles in her acting career, but one of our faves has to be the fabulous My Fair Lady, not least because she managed to make that hat look fashionable.

Many of Audrey's films were heavy on the fashion, which is why we love them so much and her early influence has no doubt shaped some of the major trends of today.

My Fair Lady was a great adaptation of a much loved classic, but you have to give a lot of the credit to the filmmakers, for clearly realising how important Audrey and her style was to the movie.

We followed Eliza's fashion journey from a common flower girl with soot stained clothes, messy hair and an awkward looking hat to a lady of excellent breeding, stunning fashion sense and a gorgeous head of hair.

It was a startling transformation, made all the more possible thanks to Audrey's natural beauty of course, and we were loving the cute little fringe she sported during her lessons.

Introduced to polite society with high collars and fitted dresses, which coincidentally are coming back into fashion for AW09, with both Chanel and John Rocha debuting the high-collar frilly fashion look, Eliza excelled at her lessons and was soon invited to the races.

Our favourite scene in the whole film has to be the magnificent scene that took place at Ascot, as the costume designers really excelled themselves with a range of unique and beautiful couture.

Every outfit worn by each lady was unique and the monochrome and grey colour palette really worked against the lavish background. Eliza's outfit was of course the most extravagant of all and we have to admit that her OTT hat was something of a style triumph.

Perhaps it was too many styles and frills piled in together, but truthfully her Ascot outfit wouldn't look out of place on the couture catwalks of today, so for them to experiment with this kind of look back then just shows how fashion forward they really were.

Despite failing a tad with her elocution and telling a horse to 'move your bleedin' arse!' Eliza's royal ball outfit was one of the most gorgeous creations to ever grace the silver screen.

Dripping in jewels, including a unique looking headband, large diamond choker necklace and earrings, her silver beaded flapper dress and red fur stole were gorgeous.

Even her piled up hair has been replicated on the catwalk and celebs alike in recent years, most notably on Jennifer Lopez who rocked the style at every award ceremony going a couple of years ago.

It goes to show you that even forty years on, Audrey and her fabulous fashion are still inspiring the celebrity elite and the average lady on the high-street today.
