Angelina Jolie is tipped for an Oscar for her role in new film, Changeling, but we think she is deserving of a more pressing award- one for her fabulous 1920s fashion flapper style.
It's a look which most would fail to pull off, but Jolie has the ability to blend into any era effortlessly. It may have something to do with the fact that she has an aura of elegance around her, which is reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn in the early 60s.
In truth, Jolie doesn't look like your average lady, despite being a major Hollywood star. She looks at home in this sort of production, where her natural beauty seems to shine through. The 1920s style suits Jolie down to the ground, with her big eyes heavily framed and her lips painted bright red, the 20s were all about elegance, despite the threat of the ongoing recession.
Changeling adapts to the setting very well, with the fashion meticulously planned to the last detail to give an accurate reflection of the era. It was all about the demure silhouette for women back then, with drop waist-dresses, fur trimmed fur coats and cloche hats all used to emphasise the figure of womanhood.
The cloche hats were used in the period to set off close bobs and finger-waved hair, and this is a fashion focal point of the film. In nearly every scene Jolie wears a hat, as was expected of women in the 20s when they stepped outside of their house.
The period in itself was very formal, with even the most causal looks appearing demure in the film. You only have to look at every scene Jolie is in to see how she holds herself in the clothing, it is the epitome of reserved elegance.
Jolie herself has admitted that the clothing she wore throughout the production helped her identify with the character, in a way she never imagined. The fashion of the era was so sweet and vulnerable in itself, it helped her get into the character of Christine Collins. If you look at images of the real Collins, the resemblance to Jolie is remarkable- which is why perhaps she is able to give such a moving performance.
The catwalk was awash with 1920s inspired style this season, with John Galliano reinventing the original flapper style dress, paired with over exaggerated eyes and Donna Karan's faithful take on the drop-waist dress, complete with red lips also scored highly on our fashion radar.
Flapper style has now filtered down into the high-street, with stores launching their collection of party dresses in time for Christmas. With sequins a-go-go being the order of service this year, beaded flapper dresses are set to be huge news, and after this film is released, expect a queue forming for Jolie-inspired fashion.
