How many gifts won't you be using from Christmas?

How many gifts won't you be using from Christmas?

Unwanted Christmas gifts are sure to be lurking around your home, aren't they? In fact there is an astronomical 53.4m presents worth an eye-watering £801m in UK this year.

And beauty gift sets top the chart of worst Christmas present in 2013.

On average every adult woman this year received nearly 2 unwanted gifts (1.95) which they estimated were worth £30 in total - over the entire female population that amounts to over £800m.

According to the survey by online beauty retailer escentual.com by far the worst presents that they received were beauty gift sets - 44.4% said they had received at least one that was unwanted, followed by socks, chocolates, Christmas jumpers, perfume, scented candles, and scarves.

So in total badly thought out beauty and perfume gifts made up 61.1% of all unwanted gifts.

Sadly the worst culprit for sending badly thought out presents was grandmothers - 27.6% of women said they were most likely to send them an unwanted gift, closely followed by the secret Santa work colleagues, and surprisingly friends weren't much better. Mums and grand-father were the next worst but dads, brothers, sisters, boyfriends and husbands were generally deemed much more adept at buying presents and all scored below 5%.

Most women revealed that they keep the unwanted gifts at the back of their cupboards 38.8%, with 8.6% of that number bringing the gift out only when the present buyer comes to visit.

Some choose to recycle their unwanted presents now with 10.3% opting to sell them on eBay, and 17.6% give them to someone else later in the year.

But an unanimous 66.4% said they thought it would be a good idea for these unwanted gifts to go to charity.

Escentual.com beauty editor Emma Leslie said: "Buying beauty gifts for women isn't that easy, especially with gift sets. You really have to know what fragrance and cosmetics brands that they like. Also it appears that there is a bit of a generation gap on what beauty products are deemed to make a good present.

"But we think it's a terrible waste for all these beauty products just to be gathering dust in a cupboard, so we have set up the #FragranceAmnesty. If you send your unwanted fragrance gifts to us at escentual.com till the end of January unopened then we will give that item to charity and will give you a voucher for £7 off your next purchase of perfume at escentual.com."
