How much do you think the routines have changed?

In fifty years our beauty routines are bound to have changed, but have we said goodbye to some products that we still should be using?

This month Superdrug celebrates its 50th birthday and to celebrate they’ve compared our beauty routines then to now.

Products that were everyday beauty essentials such as talcum powder, setting lotion, curlers and cake mascara have lost their place on the nation’s dressing table to be usurped by body butters, blow dry lotions and a plethora or modern makeup.

Beauty products from 50 years ago

Simon Comins, Superdrug Buying Director comments: “Technology has affected every part of our lives over the last fifty years and beauty is no exception. Obviously we’ve seen innovation in product formulations, but even the humble flannel has been replaced by cleansing wipes or modern sonic skincare cleansing brushes.”

Back 50 years ago Pears soap was the best-selling and women used this with a flannel to remove their make-up. These days, in favour of speed, women are picking up cleansing wipes – but we definitely think that more and more of us should be re-introducing a flannel into our routine to help remove dead skin cells and give skin a deep clean.

Our beauty routine today

Moisturiser was part of a woman’s daily routine, but this was just that… a cream designed to moisturise the skin.  No nano-spheres, no snake venom, no magic ingredients promising to turn back time.  Women were happy with a pot of Nivea or Astral. Today’s women doesn’t just use a moisturiser, they have an eye cream, a night cream, anti-ageing creams and serums as part of a multi-step skincare routine. As our beauty shelf gets more and more cluttered are we using the right products for our skincare type?

The foundation to the classic 1960s face was panstick; a stick of heavy matt foundation which was used to cover the face, and then set with powder to give a complete matt look.  Touch ups throughout the day of powder in a mirrored compact ensured the base stayed put.

The 1960s saw the invention of liquid eyeliner allowing users to create dramatic eyes, classic feline flicked eyes, the liquids were thick, dense and took a while to dry completely leaving women open to smudges. Today we are spoilt for choice with felt tipped liner pens and gel eyeliners designed to give the 1960s liner look without the peril of smudged lines.

Which beauty routine do you prefer, 50 years ago or today?
