Vanessa Hudgens has just hit her twenties...time to cleanse!

Ever found yourself wondering if you're using the right beauty products for your skin? Or what about make-up; would it shock you to know that you're skin requires different things as you mature in age?

After the hellish rollarcoaster you went through during your teens, your twenties are all about cleansing and moisturising, whilst your thirties require you to invest in some eye cream.

Once you hit your 40s however it's all about exfoliating and taking supplements to keep everything fresh, tight and as wrinkle free as possible.

Following our article last week, when we questioned the use of anti-ageing creams in your twenties, we thought it was time to look at what your skin actually does want from you as you get older.

It can be a confusing minefield out there, as all the labels compete for our custom and everyday a new wonder drug is released, which promises to give us younger looking skin in an instant.

So what's the truth and what should we be looking out for with our skin?

20s
Your twenties are a time for your skin to recover from the horrendous make-up and bad beauty regime, which you inflicted upon it during your teens.

It needs time to calm down and get into a good beauty habit before you can do anything else, but the key is to cleanse and moisturise every day to begin with.

It's important to keep pores unblocked and this is the way to do it, as it will also prevent spots, which can sometimes in extreme cases lead to scarring.

You should also use a moisturiser with an SPF, as it's easy to forget that you're skin has been in the sun for 20 years now and it needs looking after. Use one with a minimum SPF of 15 for protection.

30s
When you hit 30, it's a common misconception that you need to introduce more products into your regime, instead you just need to re-evaluate what your skin needs.

Fine lines will start to appear, as your growth hormone levels start to dwindle and skin begins to lose its firmness, so to combat this start by looking for a non-rich moisturiser which replenishes your skin.

You should also start using an eye cream to reduce redness, puffy eyes and to help prevent wrinkles too. A gel or serum is generally a lot better as it glides on lighter and sinks in quicker. Use twice a day for best results.

40s
Perky skin needs to be maintained in your 40s and to do this you should start introducing supplements into your diet. Cod liver oil is especially good to give the skin a healthy glow and costs next to nothing to buy.

Exfoliating becomes really important when you reach your 40s, as dead skin can make your wrinkle appear deeper than they actually are. Invest in a scrub which soothes redness and prevents anti-aging spots.
