Man boob reductions are on the increase as summer approaches according to new figures.
Cosmetic surgeons have seen a sharp rise in men undergoing procedures in a bid to improve their physical appearance ready for their holidays.
New figures from a leading cosmetic surgery provider reveal a vast amount of British men are feeling the pressure of toned leaders in the media like Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin, and are opting for procedures such as liposculpture and gynaecomastia (male breast reduction) to trim their bodies
Every year, there is a marked increase in men seeking male breast reductions during the months of April, May, June and July. Forty five per cent of operations in 2007 were performed in these months running up to summer and in 2008 this figure rose to 46 per cent.
This trend shows no sign of abating in 2009, with 39 per cent of this year’s male breast reduction procedures performed in March.
According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), the number of men having cosmetic surgery nationwide has now risen to almost one in 10 patients. And with an increase nationwide of 44 per cent since last year, male breast reduction surgery has surpassed all other procedures.
As well as pre-holiday paranoia, men are showing signs of ‘final straw syndrome’ where body issues on their summer holiday causes them to seek surgery on their return.
The months of September, October and November see an influx of men seeking liposculpture. In 2007, 33 per cent of the year’s procedures were performed, and in 2008 over 25 per cent were seen in these three months.
David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group, said: “Many men have body image problems and low self-esteem. They may have been teased at school or in the gym about the fat on their chests, and summer brings added pressure. The surgery we offer is fantastic because men see results so quickly, which gives them the confidence to hit the beach and live happier, healthier lifestyles."
“Men see images of sculpted celebrities like Barack Obama, who manages to run a country and have a fit, toned body, and feel the pressure to look the same."
"We always see female interest leading up to the summer, but over the last few years we have also seen a noted increase from men. A man undergoing cosmetic surgery just isn’t the taboo it once was and they are proud to get out there and flaunt their new bodies. ”
