Get your make-up look on point for autumn

Autumn has arrived so that means we need to switch up our beauty look and try out some new make-up.

As the weather changes, so do our appearances. Our jackets and boots re-emerge whilst our wardrobe changes hues from bright, bold colours to more neutral and earthy tones. It’s not just our attire that changes, but also our make-up during this transitional time of the year.

Natasha Daniel, Head Make-up Artist at fBeauty, has some great tips on how to take your make-up from summer to autumn subtly, and create the perfect look to ease you into winter.

Skin

Similarly to this year’s SS14 make-up trends, there is a strong emphasis on the ‘au naturel’ look this Autumn/Winter, as seen on the catwalk in Paris, Milan, New York and London alike. To keep in line with this theme Natasha suggests opting for a healthy, light bronzed glow, which gives the impression of a distant late summer holiday from which your skin is still reaping the benefits.

To achieve the perfect glow that isn’t too intense, Natasha recommends that you always start with a primer. “This will ensure an even application for a natural, flawless finish and to give you peace of mind your make-up will stay in place all day. I recommend Hourglass Veil Mineral primer for an oily skin type to keep the shine at bay all day and diffuse the appearance of open pores.

Next up is the all important base. For this time of year foundation isn’t necessary, so instead opt for a tinted moisturiser. Apply evenly with a brush or your fingers for best results. “For normal to dry skin my favourites are Chantacaille Just Skin, and for those on more of a budget Nars Tinted moisturiser”. The light-reflecting formula in these products creates an all over glow with a natural finish. They contain just enough coverage whilst blurring pores and blemishes. The beauty expert continues “for those of us with excess oily skins keeping us youthful but driving us mad, try Bella Pierres 5-in-1 loose mineral foundation, it’s ability to brighten the skin yet keeping it matte is impressive, but the speed this product gets to work makes it perfect for those of us on a tight schedule”.

And then who can forget the all-important bronzer. “As a beauty essential, this is my personal favourite!” This is the easiest way to sculpt, contour and define the face. All this whilst adding a glow and warmth to the face, makes this a ‘must have’ in your make-up bag for the summer/autumn months. “Use a soft, angled blush brush, but make sure you always tap away excess product before application. The best way to apply bronzer for maximum results is by sweeping it in a ‘3’ shape, working the brush from the forehead, down and into the cheekbone before finishing along the jaw. Complete your look by lightly dusting down the bridge of your nose, your chin, as well as your ears. You can even take what’s left on your brush and sweep down your neck and collarbones for a uniformed finish”. Natasha suggests using a matte bronzer for this time of the year, as they create more warm tones, as opposed to shimmer bronzers that give a sun-kissed summer complexion. “The leaders in the bronzer market are ‘Guerlain’ but I’m partial to Nars Laguna and Irresistablement as well as Stila. Marry in a peach/ coral shade of blush to the apples of the cheeks, saving the berry/rouge tones for winter and your autumn skin is ready to go!”

Eyes

The beauty tips don’t stop there as Natasha moves on to perfecting the autumnal eye. “Pack away your bright liners along with your sandles as autumn is all about toning it back down again. This time of year evokes coppery, warm thoughts and as the leaves begin to turn, so does our eyeshadow. As always define your brows, using eyebrow powders for a subtle finish or pencils to etch out a harder shape. In your creases think rich, red based browns and plums, my favourites are Laura Mercier in Truffle, Nars Sophia and New York, and apply using a pony tail shaped brush (Mac 224) which will find your socket bone for you effortlessly. For an evening look sweep the same colour under your lash line and use a berry or black liner inside your lower and upper waterline for a more dramatic effect”.

On the lid for a maximum pop of colour try using a cream base first followed by a touch of loose shadow on top, in a copper or antique gold colour and watch how your eyes will lift and sparkle. Do the same in your inner corners with a lighter shade to highlight and wait for the compliments to come pouring in! “If you don’t wish to buy two products for this look I’d suggest using Bella Pierre’s loose mineral pots for the double effect. Wet your brush first to create a metallic cream paste, and then apply with a dry brush or your finger for maximum intensity”. Colour choices for this season are Champagne (for inner corners) Harmony, Bronze, Earth and Celebration.

For a subtle day look add a touch of brown, bronze, or plum pencil for the top liner. For the evening, incorporate a classic black liquid. Add few sweeps of your favourite mascara and you are ready to face this season’s trend.

Lips

Berry and burnt orange toned reds are staple, classic autumnal colours, and will complement the chosen eye shades beautifully. Keep it matte for autumn/winter, glossier for spring/summer.

“Never under estimate the power of a lip liner; they seem to get bad press as the belief is that they’re an old fashioned product, but I couldn’t disagree more. Find a shade just a hint darker but with the same tone as your lips and sometimes that’s all you need, including a good tinted lip balm!”

By embracing these simple tips, the fBeauty team want to help you tone down your summer look and prepare you for the transitional month that takes us into the heavier and darker months of winter.
