It's that age old question which refuses to go away, but how many of us know when to stop applying that bronzer and cut down on the lippy?
We're all guilty of going OTT on our make-up look sometimes, but should we all just do what feels natural to us, even if to other people we look a complete clown?
When you look at the likes of Jordan and Jodie Marsh, they always get criticised for the amount of make-up they wear, and yet they never tone it down at all.
It's almost like they are proud of their look and to hell with everyone else, which we, on the one hand admire, and on the other think is a bit too idealistic, considering we live in a looks-obsessed society.
We wouldn't be caught dead resembling a drag queen on a daily basis, like Jodie does, but hey! it works for her, and we're sure there are plenty of other women who pile on the slap in times of woe.
Even respectable fashion icons can sometimes get it dramatically wrong, just look at Posh. She is widely regarded as one of the most stylish women in the world, and yet she too has committed many make-up crimes in the past.
Dodgy fake tan patches, too much foundation, spots on display and overshadowed eyes are just some of the things she's had to contend with over the years, and has it affected her? Nope, not one bit.
So, it's a bit puzzling that we on a daily basis struggle with how much make-up we should apply, for fear of how others will react to us. The last thing we want to hear is someone calling us orange, or suggesting that we'd applied our foundation with a trowel.
Apart from being completely mortified, it would also severely damage our confidence, and ironically enough, that's the opposite of what make-up is supposed to do.
It's been our safety blanket for a while now, and while some of us have learnt to apply it with expert precision, some just apply and go without giving it a second thought.
We've all got our own make-up rituals that we've developed over the years, but should we ever alter 'our' look for anyone else, even if strictly speaking it is a bit outlandish for daytime?
But who gets to make the rules anyway- why shouldn't we wear what we like and when? We say sod the rules ladies, and embrace your beauty look with pride!
