The new season is upon us and it's not just our wardrobes that need updating- Female First got the lowdown of the autumn/winter beauty trends from celebrity make up artist Claire Ray.

Eyebrows – This season there is a huge trend towards thick well groomed eyebrows. From McQueen to Dior, brows are bushy and perfectly arched. If you’ve been plucking your eyebrows in the past, now’s the perfect time to let them grow, as Hollywood glamour is back!

Contouring – Matthew Williamson, Fendi and Donna Karen all used contouring on their models to create the illusion of high cheek bones. If you have pale skin, use a pink/peach shade blusher.

If you have olive skin, use a bronzer. Suck your cheek bones in, then apply to the hollow of cheeks. Work up and out towards the hair line. Finish off by applying a light dusting of highlighter along the top of your cheekbones.

Gothic Make Up - Kohl rimmed eyes and liquid eyeliner were seen all over the catwalk...think dark smoky grey eyes! Complement this with pinky pale lips.

Red Lips - In contrast to summer’s glossy pale lips, blood red lipstick was seen at D&G and Roberto Cavali. Lips were lined with dark red liner and then lipstick pressed over the top to create a stain effect.

Nails – This season nails are all about being dramatic and over the top, worn long with everything from rhinestones to glitter. At Dior, nails were painted black with a white V shape at the base of the nails.

To copy the look, try the new Detail Therapy collection of faux pre-glued nails from Elegant Touch (£8.49 from Superdrug )If this isn’t for you, you could always opt for a dark navy polish or a deep red polish, or perhaps try the new French manicure. Apply one coat of white nail varnish to the whole nail, followed by pink just on the tips.
